Sooner or later it was bound to happen. I got out-smarted by a sneaky mare. Of course I know that there is no such thing as a "due date" with a mare. However, Oshoga has NEVER foaled early. Calculated with last breeding date, she was supposed to foal on 4/18. She was bagged up, but no wax, getting soft, but not so saggy.

The first barn thing I did this morning was walk down to Otschag and I was coming back up, I looked in the paddock with open stalls to where the two near to foal mares were and voila! Standing there bigger than life was this fancy colt and his Mother. It was early and I had not had coffee yet, so I was thinking, "is this real?"
As it turns out, the windows were open Art heard a commotion around 4am (horses whinnying, etc), but I was asleep. Judging from the big, dry foal with milk all over his whiskers and down his side and his scampering, I think that's about right for when he was born, so we'll go with that! Dr. Griffin, our Vet, came out and checked them both over thoroughly and at less than 12 hours, we had >800 IgG. Both are doing great.
Easiest foaling I've ever had. And probably the luckiest. I had a fleeting motion to name him "O April Fool" in honor of his birthday, but it was resoundingly vetoed! So we are calling this future star, Osiris!

Charisma was born just before dawn on April 11th. She stood and nursed quickly and showed early on that she knew the correct way to get along in the world! She has the large, lovely eye of her sire and the bright chestnut coat of her dam. Her three stockings call attention to her already vivid movement. The heart on hr face gave us an immediate hint of her personality. She is sweet and compliant by nature and already deep in our hearts.

So, Carson and I went t our new sleeping porch (thank you Art) behind the foaling stalls and settled in. I worked crossword puzzles and Carson was on her computer and phone for a while. Before shutting down for the night, Carson took the flashlight and made a check of the mares. Not to be outdone, Poljanka was dripping milk too! So it would seem the race was on…and Duessa was starting to wax. Carson and Lauryn and I had sat at the kitchen table a few weeks ago thinking on names and we had a sheet of paper with the al kind of colt and filly names on it. I have no idea where it is at this point. I know I put it somewhere because I save everything for the scrap book. It will turn up. Just as Carson and I were turning out our lamp, Carson decided that she would take her cot and sleep in front of the mare stalls. I told her that I would sleep light and she told me that I couldn’t just program myself to sleep that way! So she took her cot, blanket, pillow and flash light and settled in to quietly listen for the new life. I was up and down throughout the night and was certain at 5:10am someone was foaling. Not yet. At 6:54 am on the 31st of May, we welcomed our new pride and joy, PATRIOT, into the world.
Patriot is the daughter of Poljanka and Otschag and full sister to Padruska (now two) and Orleans (yearling)! She has stockings so tall in front that she needs garters! And socks in the back and a blaze on her pretty head and a snip under her lip.
